{"id":1360,"date":"2024-02-03T22:06:45","date_gmt":"2024-02-04T06:06:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unixwizardry.com\/?p=1360"},"modified":"2024-08-27T17:47:52","modified_gmt":"2024-08-28T00:47:52","slug":"metone-windvane-well-so-much-for-eda-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unixwizardry.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/03\/metone-windvane-well-so-much-for-eda-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"MetOne Windvane: Well, so much for my EDA skills&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"1360\" class=\"elementor elementor-1360\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1602980 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1602980\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f0e14be\" data-id=\"f0e14be\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a459474 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a459474\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Back to the Kicad drawing board apparently.\u00a0 I inadvertently used the wrong IC outline for the MLX90316 sensor, which is an SOIC-8 package and I somehow thought SOT23-8 was the same.\u00a0 The Kicad footprint I used (SOT-23-8) is <strong>obviously<\/strong> smaller than the actual chip footprint at U1, as you can see. <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1747 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/unixwizardry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/footprint-fubar-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unixwizardry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/footprint-fubar-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/unixwizardry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/footprint-fubar-230x307.jpg 230w, https:\/\/unixwizardry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/footprint-fubar-350x467.jpg 350w, https:\/\/unixwizardry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/footprint-fubar-rotated.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/> Nuts.\u00a0 I should have double checked it.\u00a0 I found this out after soldering the 0603 SMT caps to the board.\u00a0 At least I didn&#8217;t solder the header pins to the board too!\u00a0 Soldering the caps worked out pretty well, but I found out that the diameter size of the solder I was using was about the size of the pads!\u00a0 And, as sort of expected, soldering to the ground plane side of the caps was more difficult that a expected because of heat sinking.\u00a0 \u00a0So now version 2 of the board&#8230;fortunately they are cheap, and I wanted to make some changes anyway.\u00a0 On a comical side note: I was soldering one of the capacitors and in a blink of an eye (twang!) it just sprung out from my SMT tweezers!\u00a0 I probably landed on the carpet somewhere, so it&#8217;s GONE!\u00a0 Good thing I got 50 of them!\u00a0 \u00a0OK, version 2 of the MLX refit in the works&#8230;
